LINCOLN, ABRAHAM Document signed . Washington: 16 August 1861. Partially printed document on vellum appointing Sartell Prentice First Lieutenant in the 12th Regiment Infantry, accomplished in manuscript, signed by the president "Abraham Lincoln" and countersigned by Secretary of War Simon Cameron. 17 1/2 x 13 3/4 inches (45 x 35.5 cm). Verso silked but becoming detached, a few short tears and discolor at edges, manuscript portions lightly faded at places, matted and framed. An high ranking appointment just weeks after the First Battle at Bull Run, and with the less common signature of Lincoln's first Secretary of War Simon Cameron. The 12th Regiment saw extensive combat during the war and participated in twelve campaigns, including Grant's Overland Campaign in 1864, where Prentice was recognized for his actions after being wounded in the Battle of Wilderness.
