Title: Life in the Sandwich Islands: or, The Heart of the Pacific, as It Was and Is Author: Cheever, Henry T. Place: New York Publisher: A.S. Barnes Date: 1851 Description: 355 pp. 6 wood-engraved plates including frontispiece & added title; 2 wood-engravings in the text; map. 18.5x12 cm. (7¼x4¾"), original blindstamped green cloth with gilt cover vignette, spine lettered in gilt. First Edition. Hill notes that "much interesting data is included on the history and native culture of the islands. Cheever predicted eventual American rule of the islands because fifty missionary families had settled there and owned extensive lands." Among the plates is an early, thought by some to be the first, illustration of surfing in a book. Forbes 1803; Hill p.51. Pencil ownership signature of C.B. Brewster, Peru, 1880, to front flyleaf. Lot Amendments Condition: Some shelf wear, spine faded a trifle; foxing to flyleaves, with some light, mostly marginal foxing within, very good, better than generally found. Item number: 233864
