FIRST EDITION, colored engraved title and 2 colored engraved plates. The first publication of Acharius on lichenology the study of which he was the founder. The lichens were one of the most recalcitrant groups for botanists, becasue, unknown in Acharius' time, they are symbiots of fungi and algae. When this work was written, Acharius still believed them to be animals related to the zoophytes, although he expresses great doubt as to their biological status, and does suggest, tentatively, that the cohabitation of plants and animals formig a seemingly single organism should be sonsidered.
