Beschreibung:

LIBER AMICORUM of Johann Werhard Faesch of Basle. WITH AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR BY CHODOWIECKY. Manuscript on paper. 1741-1750 Oblong 8° (108 x 175mm), 104 leaves, 12 FULL-PAGE PEN-AND-WASH OR WATER COLOUR ILLUSTRATIONS. Contemporary straight-grained red morocco gilt, gilt edges. The owner was presumably a student living in Basle and the contributions illustrate his Grand Tour through Europe from 1742 to 1750. He travelled to Lyon in 1743-44, to Geneva and Lausanne in 1744, then the same year to Erfurt, in 1745 to Frankfurt and stayed in Berlin between 1747 and 1750. After that he went to Leipzig in 1750 and the same year to Norwich. The subjects of the illustrations are: f.1 Faesch's armorial fully emblazoned; f.2 A seascape with boats in pen-and-wash, probably by Faesch himself; f.6 'Vanitas Vanitatum' a classical landscape in pen-and-wash by Emanuel Bücher; f.17 Gottlieb Ludwig Effinger, armorial fully emblazoned; f.27 Fisherman with spear by a river and a village opposite in blue pen-and-wash by Benedict Meringbog; f.37 DANIEL NICOLAS CHODOWIECKY, Fête galante after Watteau, water colour, signed Berlin 1747; f.44 Landscape by a river, pen-and wash by Dietrich Heinrich von Asten; f.53 Landscape, river with houses, pen-and-wash by Johann Friedrich Schuster; f.61 Emblematic drawing of two hands in friendship, pen-and-wash by Johann Friedrich Burkhardt; f.64 Bucolic scene, pen-and-wash by Pierre Cotrell; f.72 Classical landscape, pen-and wash, unsigned; f.74 Classical landscape, blue pen-and-wash, unsigned. The final pages of the volume contain personal memoranda by David Duveluz, a wealthy London merchant of Swiss descent, mainly about himself, his family and an annual accounting of his wealth, from 1763 to 1801. 29 leaves (58 pages).
