Maxwell at New York for] Bradford and Inskeep, 1814. 2 volumes, 8 o (208 x 131 mm). 5 engraved plates and maps (lacking the large map, first plate with tear skillfully repaired on verso, some spotting). (First half of vol. 1 with gnawing to upper fore-corner, some pale dampstaining, occasional spotting and browning.) Contemporary tree calf (very skillfully rebacked to match). Provenance : W.W. Castle (pencil signature on title); ink marginalia on title and one text leaf. FIRST EDITION OF THE "MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL OVERLAND NARRATIVES," AND THE "DEFINITIVE ACCOUNT OF THE MOST IMPORTANT EXPLORATION OF THE NORTH AMERICAN CONTINENT" (Wagner-Camp-Becker).
