LEWIS, Clive Staples (1898-1963). An autograph letter signed, two autograph postcards signed and a fragment (last page only) of an autograph letter signed ('C.S. Lewis' and 'C.S.L.') to Mrs Neylan, Magdalen College, Oxford and The Kilns, 29 November 1940 - 15 November 1961; and two autograph letters signed ('Jack L.' and 'Jack') to George Sayer 6 April 1950 & 18 December 1960; altogether 7½ pages, various sizes . Provenance : George Sayer The earliest letter to Mrs Neylan declines an invitation to see her and a 'biologico-poetical friend' because of domestic necessities brought on by 'Four evacuees and one useless maid'; a longer letter in January 1941 gives religious council and recommends Thomas à Kempis and the Theologia Germanica ; a fragment, presumably to the same recipient, concerns a book, apparently of Italian travels. The first letter to Sayer invites him for 'two (=2=II=β') nights'; the second regretfully declines an invitation. George Sayer was a pupil, and later biographer, of C.S. Lewis. (6)
