Extra-illustrated first edition in Cosway-style binding with portrait miniatures. With an autograph letter signed in initials by Piozzi to James Fellowes Bath, 7 March 1817 bound in at the front of volume one and additionally extra-illustrated with about 50 engraved plates, many of which are hand-colored. Each volume features an inset portrait miniature to the upper doublure: a portrait of Samuel Johnson in volume one and of Hester Piozzi in volume two.
Two volumes, octavo (209 x 132mm). Full light brown crushed morocco, covers with gilt and black borders with triangular corners, green morocco upper doublures each inset with a hand-painted oval portrait miniature on ivorine in a gilt frame, apricot moiré silk endleaves, spines gilt in six compartments with raised bands, board edges and turn-ins gilt, all edges gilt (both upper joints repaired, vol. 1 upper joint re-started, wear to both lower joints, spine band of vol. 2 bruised, vol. 1 with frontispiece nearly detached and one edge tear and some creasing at end). Custom cloth slipcases.
