Title: Letters of John James Audubon 1826-1840 Author: Audubon, John James Place: Boston Publisher: The Club of Odd Volumes Date: 1930 Description: 2 volumes. (8vo) original linen-backed blue boards, club insignia in gilt on covers, paper spine labels, slipcase. One of 225 copies. First Edition. "This book represents an assortment of hitherto unpublished Audubon letters taken from the Thayer and Tyler collections. Not intended as a travel account, nonetheless the letters were written mostly by Audubon himself as he was moving about over the United States, Europe, and the high seas, and they relate travel experiences and descriptions of the local scenes. They serve as a supplement to his Journals. A portion of the letters, perhaps one-fourth of them, were written from the southeastern seaboard, with dates scattered over the decade of the 1830's. Of these letters, most were written from Richmond, Fayetteville, Charleston, St. Augustine, and New Orleans." - Clark. Clark, Old South, 181.
