Beschreibung:

LETTER TO DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI ON PAINTING.SMETHAM, JAMES. 1821-1889. Autograph Letter Signed ("Jas Smetham") to Dante Gabriel Rossetti discussing painting techniques, 4 pp recto and verso, 8vo (180 x 115 mm), Stoke Newington N., December 20, 1864, leaves mildly creased and toned, together with 1 p Autograph Manuscript of William Michael Rossetti identifying the writer and subject of the letter, n.d., upper right corner with loss just affecting first line of text. James Smetham was a close member of the Pre-Raphaelite circle and a personal friend of Gabriel Rossetti. In addition to painting, Smetham also produced essays and art criticism before his final mental breakdown in 1877, leading him to live the rest of his life in seclusion. In this letter, Smethem discusses painting practices and techniques, and thanks Rossetti for sending him information on dealers. He writes that Rossetti's previous letter "led me to revise the idea ... of the use of water color as a medium of small designs ... I find that a watercolor design takes me twice or three times as long as one of these studies in oil." Smetham also comments on the affect the new art of Photography has had on painting: "I am almost free from anxiety as to market—a thing that since Photography walked off with portraiture I have often had to contend against."
