Letter signed (“Alex Hamilton Secy of the Treasury”), to Jedediah Huntingdon, Collector for the Port of New London, approving of “the Measures you have taken relative to the Light house” and asking that he make the required disbursements with due economy, one page, 4to, integral address leaf, signed (“A Hamilton”) and free-stamped, pasted down at the edge of the address leaf, printed identification slip, Treasury Department, 13 October 1789 Jedediah Huntingdon, the recipient of this letter, was a merchant and lawyer who had enjoyed a distinguished career as a soldier during the Revolution, serving as a brigadier and, among other duties, chairing the court martial that tried Major André. After the war he retired to Norwich, serving as sheriff of New London County. Washington appointed him Collector of Customs of the Port of New London in 1789.
