To his cousin Arabella White, Taunton, Massachusetts. Wilcox was a teenage farmer in a small village south of Toledo. A hotbed of pro-Southern, anti-Union sentiment, Ohio was the home of Clement Vallandingham, leader of the Copperhead Democrats, who had just been convicted by an Army court-martial for publicly expressing opposition to the war and had been exiled to the Confederacy. This letter makes clear the violent Copperhead racist hatred of the state’s 25,000 free Blacks. Living in “in an old log house” while building a new home. His brother was “Captain of the Militia” just returned from a Camp near Miami, Of local news: “the negroes could not have a camp Meeting here, there is too many Copperheads.” Condition: Very good.
