Title: Letter from Louis B. Mayer to William Randolph Hearst authorizing him to conclude arrangements for Charles Lindbergh to play the leading role in an aviation picture Author: Mayer, Louis B. Place: Culver City, California Publisher: Date: September 21, 1927 Description: Typed letter signed by Louis B. Mayer, as Executive Vice President, on letterhead of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios. 22 lines. Fascinating letter from movie mogul Louis B. Mayer to newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, who fancied himself a motion picture impresario as well. Hoping to capture the magic moment following Lindbergh's record-setting trans-Atlantic flight, Mayer authorizes Hearst to "offer and conclude arrangements" on his behalf "whereby Colonel Lindbergh will play the leading role in an aviation picture to be constructed and created and developed in a high class manner, and in a manner that the Department of Aviation of the Government would heartily endorse... and the role that Colonel Lindbergh will interpret to be befitting his standing and position in the eyes of the people of our country..." For his participation, Lindbergh was to receive ten percent of the gross, plus $250,000, this latter inked in as an addition - evidently it was realized that the pot needed sweetening. Apparently it was not enough, and no film was made. Provenance: The family of Joseph Willicombe, close friend and long-time personal secretary of William Randolph Hearst. Lot Amendments Condition: Old folds and minor wear, very good. Item number: 284834
