Letter from the cartographic giant Aaron Arrowsmith, both a geographer and engraver, creator of numerous landmark maps, to John Pinkerton, Scottish antiquarian, cartographer, author, publisher and historian, addressed to Pinkerton in Paris, France. Arrowsmith writes in part, "I have made some additions to the map of North America which came home last year from that country but illness prevented my making some addition to the map of Asia. I have sent you a copy of the new Edn. of the American map, with one of the West Indies... which will be printed at the... end of this month or the beginning of June. I have got the Spanish map of South America and the Province of Quito... Yours, A. Arrowsmith." He adds an interesting note on the following leaf, "I had sent me a letter giving a curious & accurate account of the Stony mountains for many hundred of miles, if I can get ?? I will send you a [copy?] of it." A revealing record of the interaction between the mapmaker and the publisher, and Arrowsmith's process of constantly updating his maps.
