First edition of this compilation of mystical texts, bringing together first editions of works by important female mystics Hildegard of Bingen, Elizabeth of Schönau and Mechthild of Hackeborn. ‘Lefèvre’s most important publication in his program of editing the principal works of the medieval mystics’ (Schreiber). The 6 authors and their works are: The Shepherd of Hermas; Scivias by Hildegard; the Visions of Elizabeth; Liber specialis gratiae of Mechthild; two works by Robert of Uzès, and the Vision of Huguentinus. Rare; only one copy noted by ABPC sold at auction since 1975. Schreiber 16. Folio (307 x 200mm). Woodcut title depicting the 6 saints whose works are included in the volume, decorative woodcut initials from several sets (title [a1] remargined at fore-edge, repairing short tears into text, a1.12 and a few bifolia at end rehinged, light dampstain on final corners, with the last repaired). Modern blindtooled pigskin over wooden boards, spine lettered in blind. Provenance: some early annotations, extensive on a few leaves.
