LEE TO HOOKER, SOON TO BE HIS ADVERSARY IN THE BATTLE OF CHANCELLORSVILLE A very rare letter between opposing general officers. Lee formally announces the release of a wounded Union prisoner, addressing "Fighting Joe" Hooker as "Comdg Army of the Potomac." Lee writes: "A Surgeon sent to examine Lieut. McBride reports 'that the chances are very strong in favor of his recovery. He was shot through the left lung, upper lobe, with a carbine ball'. He is in a condition to be moved without sustaining injury, and will be paroled and sent to your lines at Kelly's Ford, at noon, on Sunday, the 5th inst., if that time will be convenient to you." Almost exactly a month later, Hooker and Lee were opposing commanders at Chancellorsville. That bloody battle, widely regarded as Lee's tactical highpoint, is still studied as "the almost perfact battle" (Boatner). In June, Hooker was relieved of command. Not in Lee, Wartime Papers , ed. Dowdey and Manarin, and presumably unpublished.
