LEE, ROBERT E., General, C.S.A. Autograph letter signed ("R.E. Lee") with an initialled postscript to William A. Winston of Hanover Court House, Virginia; Arlington, 12 July 1858. 1 1/2 pages, 4to, integral blank with a note concerning contents dated 1858 and recipient's docket. LEE ARRANGES FOR THE HIRE OF SLAVES FROM HIS FATHER-IN-LAW'S ESTATE The father of Mary Custis, Lee's wife, died in October 1857 and Mary inherited his estates and slaves. As Lee's son explained in his memoir of his father, Lee returned from his army post in Texas and "took charge of my mother's estate...and commenced to put in order -- not an easy task, as it consisted of several plantations and many negroes..." ( Recollections and Letters of General Robert E. Lee, ed. Robert E. Lee, Jr., 1987, p.20). Lee writes: "I send down three Negro men belonging to the Estate of G[eorge] W[ashington] Parke] Custis, viz. Reuben, Parks, & Edward, whom I wish you to hire in Virginia, to good, responsible men, for the year or a term of years, not exceeding 31 Dec. 1862, on such terms as may be in your judgement most advantageous. I do not wish these men returned here during the usual holy days, but to be retained until called for. Should you not be able to find satisfactory situations for them at once you are authorized to turn them over to an Agent with specific instructions, conformably to the above, or to place them at temporary service, where they will be cared for, until you can permanently locate them. "You will of course require the customary bond for the payment of their hire, Clothing &c. Should you not be able to find situations for these men, satisfactory to you, & you think either or all of them could be employed on the Estates in New Kent & King William without prejudice to the slaves theron, you are authorized to do so. -- I desire however that this be not done unless absolutely necessary...." In a psotscript, Lee adds: "The men will be delivered to you by Mr. Richd. Williams P[ost] Officer for the County of Alex[andri]a, Va. R E L."
