LEE, ROBERT E., General, C.S.A. Autograph letter signed ("R E Lee") as President of Washington College, Lexington, Virginia, to John W. Sims, 11 May 1867. 1 page, 4to, the text pale, with original stamped envelope addressed in Lee's hand. The former Confederate General writes concerning the funds deposited for Sims's two sons, students at the College, and their health: "In compliance with your request...I enclose the Treasurer's statement of the accounts of your sons in support of which he refers to the vouchers in his possession, & his checks in payment of same...He informs me that he gave Mr. Eskrige a receipt for the money he deposited with him...The payments made to Mr. Ruff & Bowyer board; to Campbell & Leech for books, & the smaller amounts to them for incidental expenses. I regret that your sons have suffered so much from chills & fever. [Henry?] has been interrupted very much...in his studies & his brother discouraged. They have been however, gradually improving & I presume this mountain climate will in time eradicate the disease..." With the letter are 1) a manuscript statement of the accounts described in the letter, 1 page, folio ; 2) a letterpress, brochure describing Washington College, listing Lee at the head of the faculty and describing various programs offered, 3 pages, 4to.
