ANNOTATED FAMILY COPY OF FIRST EDITION LEDYARD. Journal of Captain Cook's Last Voyage to the Pacific Ocean … Performed in the Years 1776, 1777, 1778, and 1779. Hartford: Nathaniel Patten, 1783. 208 pp. Folding map lacking (as usual) and supplied in facsimile. 8vo (173 x 118 mm). Bound from parts (stab-holes present) in period full sheep, red morocco lettering piece. Modest staining at ends, including to title-page, binding lightly rubbed, corner dampstain on lower board. First edition, annotated, family copy of the first American account of Cook's third voyage which preceded the official London narrative by more than a year. John Ledyard was a corporal of the marines aboard the Resolution. He was one of several Americans on the voyage, but he was the only one to publish an account. Ledyard relied heavily on Rickman's narrative (see lot 3038) to prompt his own memory, but he includes details of the voyage not available elsewhere. The present is Henry Seymour's annotated copy, with his signature on the title-page and a front flyleaf. Henry Seymour was Ledyard's first cousin and this is most likely a presentation copy to a good friend. John Ledyard's own father died and John was raised by his grandfather. When the grandfather passed away, guardianship of John was transferred to his uncle, Thomas Seymour of Hartford. Henry Seymour was Thomas's son. There are numerous pencil annotations and markings in an unidentified hand, but of an editorial nature and apparently in preparation for an unidentified subsequent edition. Pencil markings are present in each of the 3 parts, though most corrections appear in part 2 (pp 81-160). Part 2 includes the pages on the death of Cook. Native names and, in at least one instance, a date are corrected, word choice changed, punctuation altered, and entire sections marked for deletion. An ink stain typical of presence at a printer's appears on p 122. This copy retains a small fragment of the original map at p 160 (as the AAS copy). Forbes 52; Hill pp 176-177; Kroepelien, 717; Lada-Mocarski, 36; Sabin 39691. See also James Zug, American Traveler: The Life & Adventures of John Ledyard, 2005. See illustration.
