First issue of the first edition of Lechevalier's account of his travels in Turkey, mainly round the shores of the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea, with an important large-scale plan of Constantinople (by Kauffer and Lechevalier, dated 1786), described by the author in his preface as 'le principal objet de cet ouvrage'. Lechevalier served as secretary to the French ambassador in Constantinople, Marie-Gabriel-Florent-Auguste de Choiseul-Gouffier, a post allowing him to travel extensively in Italy, Asia Minor and to the plains of Troy.
