The Shahnameh or 'The Book of Kings' is a long epic poem written by the Persian poet Ferdowsi between c. 977 and 1010 CE. It is known as the national epic of Iran (Persia), and is of central cultural importance. The Shahnemeh consists of some 50,000 verses and tells mainly the mythical past of the Persian empire from the creation of the world until the Islamic conquest in the 7th century.
