Title: Leaf from the Catholicon Author: Balbus, Joannes Place: [Mainz] Publisher: [Johann Gutenberg] Date: [1460] Description: Single leaf, 66 lines, double column, Gothic type, rubricated. Approx. 365x285mm. First Impression. [Since the preparation of this catalog, question has been raised as to whether this is from the 1460 first impression or the 1469 second impression on Galliziani paper. As this leaf is from the half of the sheet without the watermark we are unable to definitively determine the date and impression.] Balbus grammar and dictionary of mediaeval Latin composed in the thirteenth century, the first printed secular work. The present leaf covers the D's from Defeztio to Delicie. It is generally accepted that this first impression was printed by Gutenberg himself, and the subsequent impressions (after Gutenberg’s death in February 1468) by Peter Schoeffer. Goff B-20 Lot Amendments Condition: Lightly worn where previously bound; edges lightly browned and finger soiled; else near fine. Item number: 186511
