Marvellous Adventures of Sir John Maundevile, Kt.
London: Constable and Co., 1895. 2 vols. Folio (520x405 mm). 127 original pen and ink drawings by Arthur Layard, mounted into folio sheets and facing the final published versions of these illustrations. Contemporary half green morocco, gilt, spine in 7 panels with raised bands and gilt devices. Condition: leather at spine foot of one volume worn, joints very lightly rubbed. an extra-illustrated first edtion containg layard’s original imaginative drawings for the fantastic illustrations to maundevile’s adventures. Though a fictional figure, Maundevile’s adventures were based on accounts (however embellished) of real travellers and was actually first “published” in the 14th century.
