LAWRENCE, John (1753-1839)]. British Field Sports; embracing Practical Instructions in Shooting - Hunting - Coursing...Fishing, &c...by William Henry Scott [pseud.] . London: Sherwood, Neely and Jones, 1818. 12 original parts, 8° (251 x 155mm). 34 engraved plates by Tookey, Davenport and others after Reinagle, Barrenger and others, wood-engraved illustrations in the text, advertisement leaf in parts I & IV, 2 advertisement leaves in part XI and 4 advertisement leaves in parts VIII & IX, advertisement slip in parts V & XI. (Some light foxing and soiling.) Original wrappers with wood-engraved vignette on front wrapper, a different one on part XII (lacks wrappers in part IV, others mostly a little torn and soiled), green cloth folder, in a red straight-grained morocco pull-off box. Provenance : C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (bookplate; his sale, 10 July 1939, lot 1657). SCHWERDT COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION and a rare copy in the original wrappers, complete with the 8pp. poem The Sportsman's Progress loosely inserted in part 1. Schwerdt I, p.305 'incomplete without "The Sportsman's Progress," which is generally missing. [LAWRENCE, John]. British Field Sports . London: Sherwood, Neely and Jones, 1820. 8° (225 x 135mm). 34 engraved plates, pictorial half-title. (Some foxing and offsetting.) Original pictorial boards, uncut (somewhat worn), blue cloth folder and slipcase. Provenance : John Greaves (19th-century armorial stamp on an endpaper) - Myles C. Radford (early 20th-century armorial bookplate). Second edition, The design on the half-title and on the front board are taken from two of the original wrappers of the first edition. (2)
