Author: Laurie & Whittle Place: London Publisher: John Wallis Date: 1813 Description: Engraved map, hand-colored; mounted on wood and dissected into about 60 pieces, some interlocking. 49.5x59 cm (19½x23¼"). With original mahogany box with sliding top, on which is affixed engraved title label of John Wallis. Very nice example of a jigsaw puzzle map of North and South America with much of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, produced by John Wallis using the Laurie & Whittle map. The label on the box top reads: "Wallis's New Dissected Map of America Engraved from the latest authorities for the use of Young Students in Geography. J. Wallis the original Manufacturer of Dissected Maps and Puzzles, having dedicated full 30 Years to that particular line of business requests the Public to OBSERVE that all his dissected Articles are superior both in correctness & workmanship to any in London, & that none are genuine but what are signed on the Label John Wallis [in script, printed] No. 42 Skinner Street Snow Hill." The Wallis family was the leading publisher of children's games during the first half of the nineteenth century. The firm was founded in 1775 by John Wallis and upon his death in 1818 taken over by his son Edward - (see Hannas, The English Jigsaw Puzzle 1760-1890). Provenance: Old World Auction, 12/5/07 References: Hannas, The English Jigsaw Puzzle 1760-1890, pp. 30-35 on the Wallis firm. The label is reproduced on p 33. An earlier version of a map of America is reproduced, fig. 15, with the title America; the cut of the pieces is similar in style to my copy. No mention is made of Wallis using Laurie & Whittle maps. Lot Amendments Condition: Tiny tip of one piece missing off the coast of South America; very good or better. Item number: 271902
