LAURENS, André du (1558-1609). Historia anatomica humani corporis . Frankfurt: Matthias Becker for the widow of Theodor de Bry 1600.
LAURENS, André du (1558-1609). Historia anatomica humani corporis . Frankfurt: Matthias Becker for the widow of Theodor de Bry 1600. 2° (300 x 190mm). Engraved title, engraved portrait of Henry IV on dedication, 26 full-page engraved illustrations, 4 with additional modern leaf bound-in containing the small detail engravings in facsimile and some pasted on top of each other to provide flaps, large ornamental initials, with the final blank. (Title tipped in and probably supplied from another copy, two small repairs, one affecting image, some browning and spotting throughout, a few leaves stained, affecting image of one plate, some illustrations censored with ink.) Modern calf with old spine and covers relaid (new endpapers). Provenance : manuscript inscription of a Jesuit College (in upper margin of title, partly cropped) – Dr Arturo Castiglioni (bookplate). Second de Bry edition. ‘This work became very popular and went through a number of editions. It remains as one of the more important anatomical texts of the late sixteenth century. Although the book contains many illustrations, few of the plates are taken from Du Laurens’ own observations as he took most of his figures from Vesalius, Valverde, Coiter, and others’ ( Heirs ). Durling 1312; Choulant-Frank 222; Waller 2629; Wellcome I, 1937; cf. Heirs 387 (1599 edition).
