LASSELS, Richard. The Voyage of Italy; or A compleat journey through Italy. In two parts ... by Richard Lassels, Gent. who travelled through Italy five times, as tutor to several of the English nobility and gentry . Newly printed at Paris, and are to be sold in London: by John Starkey, 1670. 2 parts in one volume, 12°. Engraved frontispiece. (Some old marginal stains, C 9 - 1 0 with outer corners torn away, F1 and 2B6 with clean tears into text.) 19th-century speckled calf by J. Larkins, gilt panelled spine with crimson lettering-piece, marbled endpapers, yellow sprinled edges (lightly rubbed). Provenance : F. Hopkinson (late 19th-century bookplate). FIRST EDITION, second issue with variant title. Lassels, a Roman Catholic divine, bequested this posthumous work to Richard, Lord Lumly (afterwards Earl of Scarborough) who travelled with him on the last of his five journeys to Italy. Wilkes described it as "one of the best accounts of the curious things of Italy ever delivered to the world in any book of travels." Lowndes 1314; Pine-Coffin 635.
