Contemporary tree calf, gilt-decorated borders on covers, spines gilt with red and black morocco lettering pieces, marbled endpapers. A bit rubbed and bumped, upper joint of volume I cracked, offsetting from plates, scattered foxing.

"LARGE PAPER" COPY OF THE FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, and the most complete (and best) edition of Marshall's early and definitive biography of Washington. Marshall was a personal friend of Washington, delivering the eulogy at the first President's funeral, and became the longest serving Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in American history (1801-1835). This London edition, called "best" by Howes was issued in two formats, octavo and this "Superb Medium Quarto" (called "large paper"), and includes 5 engraved illustrations not issued in the Philadelphia edition of the same year.
