The Ixtlán del Rio style of the Nayarit region is known for the stylized and lively human forms, and the colorful and exuberant body clothing and ornamentation. This powerful, tall male figure has a wide alert expression, and holds the small club and axe which are insignia of the warrior figures. He was likely part of an ancestor couple with a standing female figure. He wears a tunic boldly painted with the checkerboard design of alternating scroll and bisected squares, a scoop loincloth, large crescentic pendant, and the distinctive peaked cap with thick, rounded headband. The Ixtlán del Rio style was first described by the Norweigan anthropologist Carl Lumholtz in 1902 in his 2 volume tome, Unknown Mexico. For a similar figure, see Richard F. Townsend, ed.
