Large collection of leaves from medieval manuscripts, on parchment [thirteenth to fifteenth century] 19 leaves and fragments, comprising: (a) leaf from a large Missal, double column, 30 lines in a spiky gothic bookhand (some readings marked up in red penstrokes), with music in neumes arranged on clef-lines, red rubrics, small initials in ornate penwork touched in red, other initials in red or blue angular brushstrokes with baubles suspended in their bodies, 380 by 255mm., Germany (probably Rhineland), thirteenth century; (b) bifolium from an early choirbook, double column of 9 lines with music on a 4-line red stave, red rubrics, initials with penwork flourishes, scuffed on outer sides and small holes through ink-burn in places, each leaf 440 by 290mm., France, late thirteenth century; (c) leaf from another Missal, with double column, c. 52 lines in a fine and square gothic hand with music on a 4-line red stave, red rubrics, fine penwork initials formed from split bands filled with detailed foliate penwork, numerous other red and blue initials with contrasting penwork, reverse scuffed, 410 by 310mm., probably Rhineland, fourteenth century; (d) early choirbook leaf, with a large initial ‘K’ (opening “Kyrie elyson …”) in red and blue with elaborate penwork in both colours, 8 lines of main text with music on a 4-line red stave, 440 by 320mm., Italy, late thirteenth or early fourteenth century; plus a bifolium and 12 further leaves or fragments (one with an illuminated initial added later) from similar manuscripts, all recovered from bindings and somewhat defective
