Translated from the French... by John Forbes, M.D. London: [Penzance: Ygurs for] T. and G. Underwood, 1821. 8 o (210 x 131 mm). Errata leaf e2 and section title-leaf to part 1 3K4, intended to be bound in each others' place, remain in their original quires in this copy, publisher's ads on 3Kv; 8 engraved plates by John Pope Vibert. (Some foxing and discoloration.) Contemporary half calf, morocco gilt lettering-piece on spine (corners a bit rubbed). Provenance : the errors signaled by the errata corrected in the text by a contemporary hand; Steevens Hospital, Medical and Surgical Library (1813 inkstamps on title, dedication leaf, and verso of final plate). First edition in English. In his translation Forbes abridged, condensed and omitted passages from the text, reducing its length by about 50 percent. "Forbes's translation was printed in an edition of only 500 copies, all of which, according to a letter from Forbes to Laennec, had been sold by September 1823" (Norman).
