George Inness Jr. (American, 1854-1926), signed and dated 15 l.r.; 24.5 x 31 in. The son of famed tonalist landscapist George Inness George Inness Jr. mainly studied under his father's tutelage. Born in Paris, Inness was a member of the Salmagundi Club and the National Academy; he won a gold medal at the French Salon in 1899. Although many of his paintings show a prevailing influence by the Barbizon school, he, too, created tonalist landscapes like his father. This particular painting exemplifies the idea of sublimity in nature with its deep shadows and central suffused lighting.
