45x59.8 cm. (17¾x23¾"), matted. One of the most influential maps of North America, laying the groundwork for much of the cartography of the 18th century. This is an early re-issue of De l'Isle's landmark 1700 map, of which Tooley writes "A foundation map. The Great Lakes based on Coronelli showing the French strong points at Tadousac, Quebec, Fort Sorel, Montreal & Fort Frontenac.... In this map De l'Isle corrected longitude positions and was the first to revert to a peninsula form for California. He stops his western coast at Cape Mendocin. The first printed map to show the Sargasso Sea." Though dated 1700 on the map, this is the 1708 issue, with De l'Isle's address given as "sur le Quai de l'Horloge..." and Renard's imprint erased in the plate. Tooley p.19, #30; Wagner NW Coast 459; Wheat Transmississippi 79. Lot Amendments Condition: A bit toned, some mild creasing, old repair at lower centerfold; very good or better. Item number: 227842
