LAFAYETTE, Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de (1757-1834). Autograph letter signed ("Lafayette") to Mr. Julien, 30 March no year [ca.1920]. 1 page, a narrow oblong (4¼ x 6½ in)., faint mat burn at edges in French. An interesting note asking the return of a book belonging to U.S. Minister to France, Albert Gallatin (1761-1849). Lafayette thanks Julien for "the two volumes relating to the English Counties, but the work I am anxious to find because it belongs to M. Gallatin is a volume on the American constitution. I thought I had lent it to M. Julien. M. Gallatin's name is written on it. If M. Julien has the book, please send it to me as quickly as possible...." Gallatin had served as Secretary of the Treasury (1801-1813) and helped negotiate the Treaty of Ghent (1812). From 1816 to 1823 he was U.S. Minister to France.
