In 1824, the Marquis de Lafayette returned in triumph to the land that made him a hero during its War for Independence. Arriving on August 15, 1824 in New York Harbor, Lafayette was received with unprecedented patriotic revelry at every stage of his 14-month, 24-state tour. On the evening of September 11, 1824, a celebratory performance was mounted at New York's Chatham Garden Theater. The principal event was the opera The Devil's Bridge , followed by an elaborate display, "in honour of Gen. La Fayette a grand and splendid Transparency...painted expressly for the occasion," representing "the Temple of Liberty supported by 13 palm trees, emblematic of the 13 original United States"; in the center were representations, "in full uniforms" of Washington and Lafayette, who offers his hand "as a pledge of his devotion and fidelity to the liberties of the United States..."
