LAFAYETTE AIDS A DISCIPLE OF THE EDUCATOR PESTALOZZI WHO HAS "QUARELLED WITH NAPOLEON" Lafayette introduces Mr. Jullien, an apparent disciple of the eminent Swiss educational reformer Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827), whose theories laid the groundwork for modern educational systems. Jullien planned to emigrate to the United States. Lafayette writes: "You are an Admirer of Pestallozy's [ sic ] method of education. It has been a principal object of Studies and Observations with Mr. Jullien a gentleman equally distinguished by his political and Literary knowledge, and a very devoted Patriot. He has long been Employ'd in the Military department, [but] quarelled with Napoleon who found him too much of a Republican...Not knowing whether he will sail for a french harbour he has applied to me for letters of introduction. Permit me therefore to recommend him to your kind advices and the services in your power, and as this letter suffices through your good care to make him known to the president, Mr. Monroe [Secretary of State], and our other friends..." Shortly after this letter was executed, William H. Crawford was transferred to the Treasury Department in Madison's administration.
