LA CRUZ, Manuel et Juan de (1750–1792) - Coleccion de trajes de Espana, tanto antiguos como modernos, Que comprehende todos los de sus Dominios. Madrid: Casa de M. Copin Carrera de S. Geronimo, 1777. A rare and important testimony of the Spanish clothing of the time; it is only a part of the work containing 34 numbered plates (the first and second parts are complete, each with 12 plates, and there are 10 plates in the third part). Juan de la Cruz made these superb engravings of costumes from drawings by his brother Manuel, but also from drawings by several artists such as: Luis Paret, Jos. Munoz y Frias, Alf. Bergaz, Julian Davila, Antonio Carnisero, Guillermo Ferver, Juan Minguet, Agustina Azcona, Josef Ximeno. The captions under the plates are both in Spanish and French. Folio (396 x 275mm). Engraved title, 34 plates numbered 1-34 with plates 27-28 reapplied, all coloured by hand at the time (title repaired in the margin on the verso and lightly short, foxing; other copies of the work generally contain a greater number of plates). Contemporary half calf, gilt label on spine (worn). Provenance: Oyley (? ownership inscription on title).
