The drawing was made in March 1952 when Rogers was a patient at St. Mary's Hospital in Paddington. The patient lying opposite was a Greek gentleman who had been admitted to hospital for septic hand. The work was originally exhibited in 1952 with the title, 'Scene in a Hospital Ward.'
