KNORR, Georg Wolfgang. Thesaurus Rei Herbariae Hortensisque Universalis ... Allgemeines Blumen- Kräuter- Frucht- und Garten-Buch . Nuremberg: (vol.I) bei Georg Wolfgang Knorr seel. Erben, gedruckt bey Paul Jonathan Felsseker, 1770; (vol.II) Gedruckt bey Paul Jonathan Felsseker seel. Wittib, 1770-1772. 2 volumes, 2° (400 x 255mm.). Collates as Nissen except quires *-***** are bound at the end of vol.II. Text volume with engraved portrait by J.A. Schweickart after I.E. Ihle, text in Latin and German. Plate volume with hand-coloured engraved title and 301 plates on 300 leaves (plate R8/9 to vol.I on one sheet) by and after Knorr, ALL COLOURED BY HAND, some with numbers in lower right corner. Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt in compartments (rubbed, slight wear at extremities). Knorr's engravings, though not entirely original (being taken from Ehret's illustrations among others), illustrate text by P.F. Gmelin and G.R. Böhmer. Volume I appeared originally with a title dated 1750; Knorr died in 1761, and the work was reissued by his heirs. Böhmer's preface dated 1771 mentions 301 plates, presumably counting R8/9 as two; Pritzel and others after him erroneously call for an additional 102 plates. Other copies in British institutions do not exceed 301 plates. See Nissen 1081 and Supplement p.43 ('ohne Zweifel das lieblichste der deutschen Blumenbücher'); Great Flower Books p.62; Dunthorne 214; Pritzel 4757. (2)
