Engraved title by Laurence Johnson with architectural border, woodcut border on sectional title, engraved illustrations by Johnson, woodcut head- and tailpieces, and initials. (Variable browning and spotting affecting title and some gatherings, light dampstaining on the final 2 gatherings, marginal worming at the gutter of gatherings 4H-4K, small hole touching image on title, small flaws and burn holes affecting text on a few leaves, the final leaf laid down, without blank A1.) RESTORATION BINDING OF GILT-PANELLED CRIMSON GOATSKIN BY THE QUEENS' BINDER D, covers with a central panel filled with flower-tool clusters, interspersed with rosette tools, all enclosed by drawer handle tools and decorated with point and star tools, and an outer panel with triangular curlicue stamps at sides, both panels with floral corner-pieces, gilt spine in seven compartments with raised bands, titled in one compartment, the others decorated with flower and star tools and curlicue corner-pieces within frames, gilt edges (spine relaid, board edges rubbed causing minimal loss at corners), modern box. Provenance : Henrie Hibbert (early inscription on title, possibly Henry Hibbert, ?1600-1678, English divine); 'M.B.' Fifth edition, revised by Nabbes. THE MORRIS-KETTANEH-BLACKMER COPY IN A HANDSOME RESTORATION BINDING, formerly attributed to the Queens' Binder B, but more probably the work of the Queens' Binder D. Employing Nixon's criteria, the Queens' binders all 'used a conventional pointillé flower tool with four petals and two leaves, and the shape of this is usually the easiest method of distinguishing between them.' The ovoid form of the lower petal on this binding is commonly found on other bindings by D -- as opposed to those of A, where the upper petal tends to be more ovoid, or B, where the lower petal is more circular. The form of the leaves below the flower are also typical of D, with a broader left leaf, lying at a flatter angle than that on the right (cf. H. Nixon English Restoration Bookbindings , pp. 56-77).
