RESTORATION BINDING OF GILT-PANELLED CRIMSON GOATSKIN BY THE QUEENS' BINDER D, covers with a central panel filled with flower-tool clusters, interspersed with rosette tools, all enclosed by drawer handle tools and decorated with point and star tools, and an outer panel with triangular curlicue stamps at sides, both panels with floral corner-pieces, gilt spine in seven compartments with raised bands, titled in one compartment, the others decorated with flower and star tools and curlicue corner-pieces within frames, gilt edges (spine relaid, board edges rubbed causing minimal loss at corners), modern box. Provenance : Henrie Hibbert (early inscription on title, possibly Henry Hibbert, ?1600-1678, English divine); 'M.B.' (gilt-stamped initials on boards, possibly the initials of Hibbert's daughter Mary's married name); [Earl of Clare (19th-century pencilled inscription on front pastedown: 'Fine Old English Red Morocco from Earl Clare's Library', and Blackmer noting that 'Morris acquired [this book] from the Earl of Clare's library, which was sold in 3 parts at Sotheby's: 16 April and 12 August, 1866, and 31 January, 1881')]; WILLIAM MORRIS Kelmscott House (printed label [Peterson D10.1]); Richard Bennett (sale Sotheby's, commencing 5 December 1898, lot 741); Francis Kettaneh (bookplate); Henry Blackmer (sale Sotheby's, London, 11-13 October 1989, lot 165, with his booklabel). Fifth edition, revised by Nabbes. THE MORRIS-KETTANEH-BLACKMER COPY IN A HANDSOME RESTORATION BINDING, formerly attributed to the Queens' Binder B, but more probably the work of the Queens' Binder D. Employing Nixon's criteria, the Queens' binders all 'used a conventional pointillé flower tool with four petals and two leaves, and the shape of this is usually the easiest method of distinguishing between them.' The ovoid form of the lower petal on this binding is commonly found on other bindings by D -- as opposed to those of A, where the upper petal tends to be more ovoid, or B, where the lower petal is more circular. The form of the leaves below the flower are also typical of D, with a broader left leaf, lying at a flatter angle than that on the right (cf. H. Nixon English Restoration Bookbindings , pp. 56-77). Blackmer 920 (the present copy, attributing he binding to the Queens' Binder B); STC 15055.
