Kniga o prechestnei i prechiudnei ... Marii Ikone ... v selenii Tikhvine [The Book of the Holy and Wonderworking ... Icon of Maria ... in the Settlement of Tikhvin] . Russia, 19th Century
Kniga o prechestnei i prechiudnei ... Marii Ikone ... v selenii Tikhvine [The Book of the Holy and Wonderworking ... Icon of Maria ... in the Settlement of Tikhvin] . Russia, 19th Century 352 x 230 mm. ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER, in Church Slavonic. 260 leaves, 22 lines per page in red and black, 7 full-page watercolour illuminations, 2 three-quarter page and 125 half-page, three illuminated headpieces. Contemporary old-style embossed calf over wooden boards, clasps. A fine Old Believer transcription of the account of the wonder-working icon of the Mother of God of Tikhvin originally composed in 1682, with typically finely painted illustrations after the original manuscript. Tradition states that this is one of the three icons painted by St. Luke, and that it was found in Jerusalem before being taked to Byzantium. There it disappeared until being discovered in north-west Russia by Lake Ladoga, where the monastery of Tikhvin later flourished. This history is one of several that were produced in the 17th Century after the icon was instrumental in the defeat of the Swedish army beseiging the monastery in 1613. In his survey of manuscripts from the Time of Troubles, S.F. Platonov records the richly illustrated manuscripts of the XVII-XIX Centuries, including those produced by the Old Believers.
