The first book by Lewis Gaylord Clark (1808-1873), a collection of Irvingesque essays and gossip that originally appeared in the Knickerbocker Magazine's "The Editor's Table" column, a precursor to the Talk of the Town in the New Yorker. Inscription reads: "“For Charles Astor Bristed, Esq. / With the Warm Regards of / His Friend / L. Gaylord Clark. / New York / April 25, ’53.” Clark was the editor of the Knickerbocker and friends of many in the New York literary scene. Bristed was also a regular contributor to the Knickerbocker.
