KIRCHER, ATHANASIUS. Phonurgia, sive Conjugium Mechanico-physicum Artis & Naturae Paranympha Phonosophia Concinnatum. Kempton: Rudolph Dreherr, 1673. Folio, contemporary vellum over pasteboard, covers gilt with large oval armorial stamp of Maximilian, Bishop of Lambach Abbey, smooth spine divided into 7 gilt panelled compartments, the second lettered in gilt, 18th-century manuscript shelf-number on backstrip, edges red-sprinkled, tail of spine chipped, 1-inch tear across backstrip, a few other small tears to spine, corners a trifled rubbed, very minor light stain to half-title, dampstaining to fols. R2 and Aa2 . FIRST EDITION, half-title, engraved panoramic frontispiece, engraved title vignette and engraved portrait of Leopold I by G. A. Wolfgang, 2 engraved plates, numerous engraved and woodcut text illustrations (many of musical instruments and acoustic devices), woodcut head- and tail-piece ornaments and initials, with Hh4 blank. Caillet 5789; De Backer-Sommervogel IV, 1068. A very good, fresh copy of Kircher's study of acoustics, the human voice, and the construction of musical instruments. " Phonurgia nova is, in part, Kircher's reponse to Sir Samuel Morland (1625-95), a fellow of the Royal Society of London, who claimed... to have invented the megaphone. Numerous testimonies from Kircher's admirers... are appended to the work defending Kircher's claim as the inventor of the tuba stentorophonica , as Morland called it... The Phonurgia treats the science and applications of sound amplification and echoes. It was THE FIRST BOOK PUBLISHED IN EUROPE DEVOTED ENTIRELY TO ACOUSTICS...
