KIRCHER, Athanasius (1602-1680). Magnes sive de arte magnetica opus tripartitum. Rome: L. Grignani for Hermann Scheus, 1641. 4 o (218 x 150 mm). 2 additional titles and 32 engraved plates including one folding plate and one volvelle (some plates trimmed close, volvelle loose). (Some light marginal wear to lower right corner, affecting a few letters on some pages). Contemporary limp vellum, spine ink lettered. Provenance : Jesuit College, Heidelberg (ink inscription on title page dated 1733). FIRST EDITION of Kircher's second and largest work on magnestism. "The work is divided into three parts: the first on the magnet itself; the second on its application (encompassing magnetic statics, magnetic geometry, magnetic astronomy and magnetic natural magic); and the third on such topics as the magnetism of the earth and other heavenly bodies, the use of the thermometer, natural and artificial weather, magnetism of medicines, poisons and antidotes, the attractive force of the imagination, and the magnetism of music and of love.
