Eothen, or Traces of Travel, brought home from the East, 1st edition, John Ollivier, 1844, half-title, folding hand-coloured lithographic frontispiece, one other hand-coloured lithographic plate (with tissue-guard), toning, occasional spotting, frontispiece linen-backed, title-page with small marginal tissue-repair and faded presentation inscription 'W. L. Birkbeck, with the author's kind regards', armorial bookplate to front pastedown (Lionel Phillips, motto 'veritas vincet'), top edge gilt, others untrimmed, contemporary red crushed half morocco by Root & Son, gilt spine, a few minor scuffs, 8vo (22 x 13.5 cm), together with: Markham (Clements R.) A History of the Abyssinian Expedition, 1st edition, Macmillan and Co., 1869, half-title, 4 folding maps (repaired closed tears), plan, modern tan half calf, 8vo (21.6 x 13.5 cm), Cobbold (Robert Henry . Pictures of the Chinese, drawn by Themselves, 1st edition, John Murray 1860, 2-colour engraved frontispiece, 34 single-colour lithographic plates numbered 1-30, text illustrations, Westminster School prize plate dated 1860 tipped to initial blank, contemporary tan calf gilt, 8vo (18 x 12 cm), Chapman (Abel, & Walter J. Buck). Unexplored Spain, 1st edition, Edward Arnold, 1910, 32 plates including frontispiece, bookplate of William Wordie of Glasgow (1884-1952), top edge gilt, others untrimmed, contemporary green crushed half morocco, large 8vo (25 x 17.1 cm), and [Stieler, Karl], The Rhine from its Source to the Sea, translated from the German by G. C. T. Bartley, new and revised edition, J. S. Virtue and Company, Limited, 1888, half-title, wood-engravings in text, contemporary prize-binding of red full calf by Relfe Brothers, large 8vo (Qty: 5) Kinglake: Abbey Travel 362; Blackmer 911; Atabey 635 for the French translation. Cobbold: Cordier Sinica 90. Kinglake's work, a description of an eighteen-month journey through the Ottoman Empire, is considered 'a classic of travel literature'. The recipient of this copy was English legal scholar William Lloyd Birkbeck (1806-1888).
