KEYNES, John Maynard] – A miscellany of c. 140 engraved plates from various 19th-century works of fiction, periodicals, etc., ranging from the comic to the sentimental and melodramatic, by various artists and engravers including Crowquill, Dalziel, Gilbert, Millais and Swain (several plates heavily browned, a few torn without loss), bound in contemporary dark green crushed morocco by Gray of Cambridge, gilt edges (heavily rubbed and scuffed, rebacked). The front pastedown INSCRIBED in purple ink, “We offer these plots to Virginia. Lydia, J[ohn] M[aynard] K[eynes], Christmas 1927.” John Maynard Keynes married the Russian ballerina Lydia Lopokova, who has signed her own name above, in 1925.
