KEY, Francis Scott (1779-1843). Author of the Star-Spangled Banner . Autograph manuscript signed ("F S Key"), an account book, n.p., 4 June 1827 to 20 April 1831. 18 pages in a book of 39 leaves, 8vo, 188 x 122 mm. (7 3/8 x 4 13/16 in.), in original marbled paper wrappers, browning, minor tears to first four leaves (two repaired), in a blue quarter-morocco slipcase . [With:] a patriotic Star Spangled Banner envelope. THE FINANCIAL ACCOUNT OF FRANCIS SCOTT KEY. A record of Key's deposits and payments drawn upon the Union Bank for a four-year period. The book is entitled in Key's hand "Union Bank" and is boldly signed on the cover. Account entries are mostly in an unknown hand, but several have been written by Key. Payments have been made to various individuals, including several to Ann Key, one to S.P. Chase, one to J. Buchanan and one to Samuel Houston. Balances range from $233.26 to $9195.15. Key, a successful lawyer, is best known for his poem "The Star Spangled Banner," written after the British bombardment of Ft. McHenry during the War of 1812. Provenance: Frederick W. Skiff (paper bookplate on slipcase) -- Estelle Doheny (paper bookplate on slipcase).
