Kettubah in Persian booklet form, in Hebrew, opulently illuminated and decorated manuscript on paper [Persia (Yazd), dated 1866] 8 leaves (plus an original paper endleaf at each end), single column, 5 lines in a square script, these encased within a full border of gold with pink, blue and yellow petals, further borders around text frame and between lines of blue dots and diagonal lines, and full floral borders as before, each double-page opening encased within a single rectangular border of of blue dots and diagonal lines on gold, text opening for first 4 pages with half-page headbands in a riot of blue, pink and gold designs around a central cabouchon, fol. 4 a skillful contemporary replacement, old water damage at foot staining borders there pink, some small smudges, overall good to fair condition, loose in contemporary red velvet binding over pasteboards, 290 by 220mm. Persian kettubot are commonly set in this book format, eschewing depictions of human beings, and the present example is an opulent testament to the assimilation of Jewish populations into those of the Middle East and their material culture in the nineteenth century. Yazd was one of the major centres for the production of such texts, alongside Kashan, Tehran and Isfahan, reflecting the strength of the communities there.
