.45 cal., 10.5" rifled octagonal barrel, original flint, engraved lock in need of adjustment to function properly. Curly maple stock with brass furniture, side plate has period engraved inscription "John Williams 1812." Grip has an old repair on the left side. John Williams served as a Second Lieutenant in Captain John Irwin's Troop of Light Dragoons, Major Freeman's Squadron of Calvary, Georgia Militia in the War of 1812 from August 22, 1813 to February 28, 1814. Later, he was a Georgia State Senator from 1822 to 1828 and State Treasurer from November 24, 1831 to November 23, 1833. Family oral tradition relates that William's granddaughter, Mary Anne Cowles, hid this pistol in her pantaloons from Union troops during Sherman's March to the Sea. It was originally part a set with only this one surviving. Full provenance is included. Condition: Good; bore dark with light pitting, rifling strong, barrel and lock have a plum patina. One sideplate screw has been replaced. Crack on the left grip has an old repair with two nails.
