KENNEDY, William (1814-1890). A Short Narrative of the Second Voyage of the Prince Albert, in Search of John Franklin . London: W.H. Dalton, 1853. A presentation copy of this very rare Franklin Search narrative by the man who first used dog sleds from an exploring ship , inscribed "To Dr. Hodgkin from his obliged friend The Author." William Kennedy was a native Manitoban, the son of a Hudson's Bay Company Chief Factor and Mary Bear, an aboriginal woman. "As a lad at Cumberland House he had met Sir John Franklin and in 1850 he offered his services to Lady Franklin to help in the search for the Franklin expedition. He commanded two of the Franklin search expeditions and discovered the Arctic passage known as Bellot Strait. He was the first to use dogs and sleds from an exploring ship" (Manitoba Historical Society website). Also perhaps a reflection of his debt to his mother, in this work Kennedy gives a detailed description of how to build a "snow-house." This is only the second copy of this book to appear in the auction records since 1964. Arctic Bib. 8539; Sabin 37443; TPL 3270. Octavo (197 x 123mm). 4 duotone lithographed plates including frontispiece; folding engraved map with route drawn in red (few spots at ends). Original blue cloth (rebacked with most of original spine preserved). Provenance : Dr. Hodgkin (presentation inscription on front free endpaper) – Copley Amory (bookplate) – Ten Pound Island Book Co.
