KENNEDY, JOHN FITZGERALD, President . Typed letter signed ("John Kennedy") to SENATOR BARRY GOLDWATER, with "Senator Goldwater" in the typed salutation crossed out and corrected by Kennedy to read "Dear Barry," Washington, D.C., 19 August 1963. 1 page, 4to, 225 x 170 mm. (8 7/8 x 6 3/4 in.), on printed White House stationery, with matching envelope, both neatly inlaid to a larger sheet. ACKNOWLEDGING A SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER'S GRACIOUS CONDOLENCES A letter which links two of the dominant political figures, Democrat and Republican, of the era. "Dear Barry, Mrs. Kennedy and I were deeply moved by your thoughtful remembrance of our son. This kind expression of sympathy meant a great deal to us...." The Kennedy's newborn son, Patrick, born prematurely, had died ten days prior to this letter. The President himself was dead three months later and less than a year later Goldwater became the Republican nominee for President. Provenance : The Pratt family collection (sale, Sotheby's, 25 April 1989, lot 132).
